Starbucks CEO's commute sparks environmental criticism

Starbucks' incoming CEO, Brian Niccol, is drawing environmental criticism after it was revealed he’ll be commuting by private jet from Newport Beach to Seattle instead of relocating despite a hybrid work policy requiring him in the office three days a week, the decision to fly frequently has raised sustainability concerns. Starbucks defended the arrangement, stating that Niccol’s travel is essential for his role.

Pound hits 13-month high as dollar plummets

The pound surged to $1.31, its highest level in over a year, as the dollar weakened amid growing expectations of a U.S. interest rate cut next month. Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July meeting revealed that most policymakers anticipate a rate reduction in September if economic data aligns with projections. This drove the dollar index to its lowest point since December. 

Bavarian Nordic stock soars on major vaccine order

Shares of Danish biotech firm Bavarian Nordic surged over 12% in early trading Thursday after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings. The boost was further fueled by a significant vaccine order from an undisclosed European country amid the ongoing mpox outbreak. With the only approved mpox vaccine, Bavarian Nordic has seen its stock climb nearly 40% since the start of the year.
